In a devastating incident at a hydroelectric plant near Bologna, Italy, tragedy struck as an explosion during maintenance work led to a fire and flooding, claiming the lives of at least three individuals. The town of Bargi is left reeling from the aftermath, with four people still missing and three others severely injured and hospitalized.

The catastrophe unfolded at approximately 3 pm (13:00 GMT) on Tuesday, with the explosion ripping through the dam on Lake Suviana, a crucial water source for the power station. The force of the blast caused significant damage to the underground structure, collapsing parts of its nine-storey framework and triggering a fire. As a result, flooding ensued at depths reaching up to 60 meters (200 feet), complicating rescue efforts.

Marco Masinara, the mayor of Camugnano, expressed the grim reality of the situation, confirming the discovery of three fatalities and the ongoing search for the missing individuals. Additionally, three individuals sustained serious injuries and were rushed to the hospital for treatment.

The power company Enel, which owns the plant, promptly evacuated its workforce and is actively collaborating with the fire department in rescue operations. Masinara shed light on the challenges faced by rescue teams, particularly in accessing the submerged areas where the incident occurred. Initial reports suggest that the accident transpired during turbine maintenance, emphasizing the hazardous nature of the work environment.
